Solution to high gas prices!

I recently was on Facebook and seen one of my friends was trying to get people to join together and have a gas boycott on a day in the near future to protest the high gas prices. The first thing that I thought about doing was deleting my friend for joining in on such a ludicrous idea. I couldn’t believe that he actually believed that this would work. As I looked more into it I realized that a lot of people think that this would work. IT WON'T!!!! I promise you that no big oil company is going to care in the least bit if you don’t buy gas on Thursday the 31st. The idea is that they will get hit because they won't sell any gas on the 31st so they will have record low sales. The other side of this that people don’t realize is that then they will have record high sells on the 1st because everyone that didn’t buy gas on  the 31st now has to fill up the very next day. Now don’t get me wrong I do think that something needs to be done but this is not the answer.
I propose a better solution all together. If a boycott is what people are willing to do then it needs to be done the right way. Don’t just boycott all gas for a day; instead what needs done is for someone to decide on one single company, like Exxon Mobile or ConocoPhillips. Then we as a nation or at least however many people that we can get together and completely stop buying from that one company. The only way it would work is if a very large number of people did this at once. All the people that agree to not buy from this one company should do it indefinably. Set goals like "only buy from this company if the gas drops below $2.00 a gallon there. This would cause the company to have to drop prices eventually or go out of business. Trust me they will cave. Then all the other companies will have to follow suit to be competitive with the one that the people caused to drop prices. This would work and I don’t think it would take very long for that said company to start dropping prices.
The problem with fuel prices is that the big oil companies set their prices on predictions of supply and demand. If they think that supply will drop then they raise prices if they think that demand will go up they raise prices. They don’t do this when supply goes down or when demand goes up they do it when they feel like it. Demand like summer driving should not raise prices. There are plenty of refineries running at less than half of their abilities just to keep supply down and prices high. The other thing that could be done is that this country buys more of the world's oil than any other three countries combined. We as a nation or government could set the price that we are willing to pay per barrel but we don’t. All we as a country would have to say is this is how much we are willing to pay for a barrel and not a penny more either sell it to us for that price or someone else will. We have that power as consumers but we don’t use it instead we let these money hungry oil tycoons set their prices and we just take it.

  1. I love the idea! I think if everyone posted this idea on facebook we could do it. Everyone always has friends it would be like all over the US in a matter of days maybe if we start a post then we could get are friends on it. If your serious, I am with you just reply to your post with a start day and the company we are no longer going tpo buy from. I have friends and relatives even willing to do this after reading your proposal. All you have to do is let us know when! Awesome story!!!
