This article I about died when I read it. They claim of the writer is that the new Kinect system for the Xbox 360 is somehow racist. The reasoning that they have for this is that the Kinect doesn’t recognize darker skin colors in low lighting. For those of you who don’t know already Kinect is an attachment for the Xbox that makes it sensor your movements so that you don’t need a controller. We have one for our Xbox and we love it. Kinect came out this week and has been a big hit for the people that are looking for something to get the kids up off the couch and moving around.
As far as the thing being racist that is just plain ridicules. No inanimate object could be racist. What you have to realize is this thing is a camera. Cameras have always had troubles picking up darker skinned people and this is because of physics not because they don’t like black people. I am sure that most people of darker complexion know this from experience and would gladly tell you that it’s true. It amazes me that the term racist is thrown around so much lately. It seems like no matter what you do you can be called racist. Recently I was called racist for being against one of the president’s policies. This is where the word gets way over used. I can disagree with someone’s policies and not be racist. This camera has problems with physics and has trouble identifying darker complexions but it is not racist. If someone comes up with a better design for cameras that doesn't have this effect I’m sure all industries that utilize cameras will change happily. Until then though we have to use what technology has given us and realize that it’s not perfect and that the imperfections don’t make it prefer one race over the other.
Ray, good comments. I certainly agree with you, this certainly is NOT racist. I can also verify the fact that it is sometimes hard to set the lighting just right for pictures. My children are bi-racial and have dark tan skin tones and at times the lighting is not good for pictures. When we a have a family picture, (and we have a large family) you cannot see my children's faces at times because of the lighting. I feel the person that wrote this article could be "pullin the race card", as I tell my children, "pullin the race card" IS NOT AN OPTION. If you can't get results with your own credentials then it wasn't meant to be....Maybe this writer needs to talk to me!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this! This is so funny! Really a machine being racist. What will they come up with next? Thank-you so very much for writing this it made my night!!!
